About the Library

The library was named in honor of Professor James E. Lovan in 1974.


James E. Lovan

Professor Lovan taught Engineering Technology between 1945-1974.  He was the Chairman of the Library in the 1960's.  Mr. Lovan Graduated from Southwest Missouri State College in 1933, earned an advanced degree from the University of Nebraska in 1938, and later completed advanced study at the University of Pennsylvania and the Argonne National Laboratory. 

Before joining the Kansas City campus, Mr. Lovan was a teacher and Junior High School Principal for the Willow Springs, Missouri Public Schools, 1933-1937, High School Principal and teacher for the Buffalo, Missouri Public Schools, 1937-1942, an instructor at the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics, 1942-1943, and an Instructor at William Jewell College, 1943-1945.

After retiring from the university, Professor Lovan continued to encourage and support students in their educational goals by organizing the Willow Springs Scholarship Club with Harold Protiva in 1976.

Announcements

New hours --- 3 March 2008                                                                               The James E. Lovan Library will be changing hours.  The library will be closing at 5:00pm on Monday nights and will be open until 8:00pm on Friday nights.

NEW OFF CAMPUS DATABASE AUTHENTICATION METHOD --- 1 March 2007
DeVry University is moving to a new e-mail platform for students. DeVry and Microsoft have joined together to provide students with a free e-mail account that can be used for your student needs. Your current student email: Example: benjaminfranklin@acad.kc.devry.edu is going away. You need to activate your new account before March 2, 2007. The new account will NOT be linked to library resources in any way.  After March 2, students may access library resources by clicking the logos on the front page or by picking up a password sheet from the library. 

 WORLD CAT AND FIND IN A LIBRARY --- 15 August 2006
The James E. Lovan Library has joined world cat.  World cat provides access to 72 million bibliographic records and significantly increases the capabilities available for advanced research.  It also places the library's OCLC holdings in OCLC's World Cat/ Find in a library.

EW WEB PAGES FOR REGIONAL UNIVERSITY CENTERS --- 15 August 2005
The library has completed web pages for all university centers assigned to it within its region; these centers include one in Downtown Kansas City, Two in St. Louis, Missouri, Two in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and one in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.  These pages include information linking students to university resources as well as information linking students to their public libraries.  The pages also offer access tutorials showing students exactly how to access their library remotely. 

PART-TIME LIBRARY JOBS --- 28 February 2008
The library is no longer accepting applications for student positions.

EW DATABASE PRODUCTS --- 7 July 2004
The library has added two very powerful informational products to its compliment of databases.  Safari Technical Books Online provides access to hundreds of technical e-books.  The library has also added Reference USA to its Business and Career Services databases.  This database provides information on companies of all sizes across the United States. 

LIBRARY RENOVATION COMPLETED --- 20 April 2004
The renovation of the James E. Lovan Library is completed.  The library reopens for business on 20 April 2004.  The library now features more seating, refurbished chairs, powered tables, new steel shelving, impressive art prints, DVD's, more computer workstations, and a much improved atmosphere.

DATABASE CHANGES ---
1 July 2003
ProQuest will become the primary periodical database for the James E. Lovan Library.  The library will continue to provide access to the Computer Select portion of EBSCOhost.

10 February 2003
Jared Rinck was quoted in an important press release discussing the use of the CorpTech database at DeVry University-Kansas City.

NEW DATABASE ADDED! ---11 November 2002
The DeVry - Kansas City library is one of only two libraries in the nation to offer access to the online version of CorpTech.  Visit the library to learn more about this technology company database!
